Case Study

Graphitic Energy

Graphitic Energy, a clean hydrogen producer, called on DG+ for a new name, logo, and website to reflect its bold solution for an abundant, clean energy future.

About

Graphitic Energy uses methane pyrolysis to convert natural gas into hydrogen energy and solid graphitic carbon with minimal direct CO₂ emissions. Their technology simultaneously produces low-cost, scalable hydrogen and graphitic carbon, which offers numerous industrial applications. With the launch of its pilot plant in Texas in March 2025, Graphitic shows how natural gas can fuel low-emission American energy production — no carbon capture or renewable electricity required.

Challenge

Graphitic Energy needed a new name, a new logo, and a new website. Without an in-house marketing team to showcase and support its ongoing evolution, the company engaged DG+ in August 2024 for a new brand identity and web development services.

Complete brand refresh: The company, formerly known as C-Zero, wanted more alignment between their product value and branding in just five months, a tight deadline for such a monumental shift. Along with a new name, the company also sought a new logo as part of a complete brand identity transformation to firmly establish a new chapter in its history.

Website overhaul: With a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new clean hydrogen facility on the horizon, the company saw an opportunity to debut a dynamic website that reflected its momentum. The site needed to explain the company’s history and novel technology to a broad audience while inspiring new investment. It also needed to reflect the company’s pragmatic approach to climate change impact, which seeks to reduce carbon emissions while drawing on established energy supply chains.

Clarify corporate identity: The company developed a novel methane pyrolysis technology that produces two assets of value: hydrogen and graphitic carbon. This raised a critical question: Did it see itself as a hydrogen energy company, a carbon-producing company, or something it hadn’t yet considered? The leadership team invited DG+ into the conversation for its impartial and industry-informed perspective to clarify the company’s vision for the future.

Solution

DG+ combined its marketing, design, and development expertise to lead Graphitic’s corporate transformation, giving it an exciting new visual presence to coincide with breakthroughs in its hydrogen and carbon production.

New company name: The entire DG+ team participated in a Figjam brainstorming session for C-Zero’s new name. Drawing on themes of transformation, coastal geography, chemistry, pragmatism, and more, the DG+ team generated hundreds of name ideas, of which dozens were highlighted as potential candidates. The company selected Graphitic Energy as its new name in December 2024.

New company logo: Ryan Schlegel, the project’s lead designer, took the reins to reinvent Graphitic Energy’s visual identity. From the beginning, Graphitic indicated an interest in the number 6 (the atomic number for carbon) and hexagons, which correspond to the molecular structure of the company’s graphitic carbon. Many of Ryan’s initial concepts — including the design that Graphitic selected as its new logomark — utilized hexagonal imagery. The full logo also includes the company’s name in a bespoke font Ryan selected specifically for the company’s use.

New brand palette: DG+ initially presented the new logo in the company’s existing colors: black and dark blue. However, because many of Graphitic’s competitors in hydrogen energy production use blue logos, the DG+ team explored a different approach. Ryan shifted the logo to a vibrant red to reflect the company’s bold rebranding and help it stand out in the industry. The company quickly embraced Graphitic Red as its new primary color.

New website: DG+’s website copy sought to explain Graphitic’s novel technology to a broad audience while ensuring it could also elevate Graphitic’s standing in the industry and inspire future investment. Graphitic welcomed Ryan’s unique web design ideas, which were brought to life by Nadia Johnson, the project’s lead developer. The immersive scrollytelling feature on Graphitic's "Technology" page explains Graphitic's process for converting natural gas into low-emission hydrogen and graphitic carbon using evocative imagery and dramatic spacing, creating an emotionally resonant experience that highlights Graphitic's unique capabilities and position in the market.

Marketing collateral: Drawing from the website’s design concepts, DG+ developed a slide deck template, company one-pager, and business cards for Graphitic to present a unified brand image when interacting with stakeholders at investor meetings and events. Graphitic also utilized their new branding for new swag items — including hats, polo shirts, and stickers — to distribute to staff and other corporate supporters.
