Case Study

UtilityAPI

Strategic messaging and website design to refine positioning for a utility data provider serving multiple stakeholders.

About

UtilityAPI unleases utility data for clean energy developers, making it easy to access essential information for site assessments, market settlement, energy management, and rebate access. Their data platform is highly secure, competitively priced, purpose-driven, and available across a large operating region — leveraging datasets from over 100 utilities across the U.S.

Challenge

UtilityAPI recognized that their growing business needed a brand that could evolve alongside it. Communicating value to a diverse audience — including developers, utilities, and end-users — was becoming increasingly important, but also more complex. They selected DG+ to help clarify their messaging, strengthen their digital presence, and support ongoing growth.

Their existing content was dense and overlapping, making it hard to convey product value without overwhelming users. User journeys were fragmented, especially across 18 granular and redundant use-case pages. At the same time, low search visibility and a disjointed content structure — including a blog hosted on a separate domain — limited reach and discoverability. Internally, keeping the website current was a challenge. The team needed a system that supported fast updates and consistent branding. With multiple stakeholders and shifting priorities, they also needed a partner who could help align teams and keep the project moving forward.

Solution

DG+ developed a scalable, adaptable platform that effectively communicated UtilityAPI’s offerings, improved SEO performance, and provided a seamless user experience. Several key areas of focus support their future growth:

Brand and messaging:

  • Clearer product marketing: DG+ developed a more unified software marketing strategy, defining key messages to showcase the value of UtilityAPI’s products for a variety of stakeholders. Thoughtfully outlined use cases improved clarity, reduced redundancy, and enhanced navigation.
  • Competitive positioning: DG+ identified keyword gaps and crafted a distinct, consistent tone for UtilityAPI within the utility data-as-a-product ecosystem, balancing mission-driven messaging with technical precision. DG+’s integration of the blog onto the main site further boosted SEO and helped capture more relevant traffic.

Website design and development:

  • Optimized website architecture and UX: DG+ restructured the site using research-driven insights. User journeys were mapped and leveraged to improve navigation and increase engagement.
  • Scalable design system: DG+ implemented a modular, "building block" approach that enables easy content updates by both developers and non-developers, ensuring the website remains adaptable over time.
  • Refined visual identity for redesign: DG+ helped align the team on a unified design direction with an expanded color palette, updated typefaces, and supporting graphics that reinforced their core narrative “unleashing data.”

Collaboration and flexibility:

  • Seamless stakeholder coordination: DG+ worked closely with multiple teams to align messaging, design, and site functionality — laying the groundwork for a unified market presence that transcended organizational limits.
  • Security-conscious problem solving: DG+ prioritized solutions that limited external integrations, respecting UtilityAPI’s product-specific security concerns and reinforcing their reputation as a trusted industry leader.
